Maria Sharapova - the Russian former world number one who has been given a two-year ban by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) following her positive test for the banned drug meldonium at this year's Australian Open. Meldonium was added to WADA's list of banned substances at the start of the year after evidence that it boosted blood flow and enhanced athletic performance. Sharapova is the world's highest-paid female athlete. Her career earnings amount to $36 million while her off-court earnings, according to Forbes, are around $200 million.
Laos - this country was defeated by India in one of the biggest ever wins and to help India book a berth in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup football Qualifiers. The victory and a berth in the Asian Cup Qualifiers will ease a lot of pressure on Coach Stephen Constantine whose future has been under a scanner after a string of poor shows by the national team.
Sun Yu - the badminton player of China was defeated by Saina Nehwal in the finals to win the Australian Open badminton title. It is Saina's second Australian Open victory, having clinched the title in 2014 as well.
KL Rahul - he became the first Indian player to score an ODI century on debut when he scored an unbeaten 100 against Zimbabwe in the first ODI at Harare. He is the 11th player overall to do so. He is also the first player to score a century in both Tests and ODIs in his maiden innings as opener. India defeated Zimbabwe by 9 wickets in this match.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni - he became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to complete 350 dismissals in 50 over's cricket. Mahendra Singh Dhoni became the fourth wicketkeeper in the world to effect 350 dismissals in One-day Internationals, while widening the gap further with his India predecessors. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has taken 261 catches and effected 89 stumpings in 278 matches. He is now placed fourth in the overall list behind Kumar Sangakkara (482 victims), Adam Gilchrist (472) and Mark Boucher (424 victims).
Cleveland Cavaliers - the basketball team which won the NBA basketball championship for their first ever Larry O'Brien trophy. They ended their 52-year old drought in major sports championship and it is also their first NBA title. They also became the first team to comeback after trailing 3-1 in the finals. The Most Valuable Player for the team was LeBron James who led the charges for Cavaliers with 27 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists-his 7th triple double in the NBA finals. Cleveland Cavaliers defeated Golden State Warriors 93-89 in the finals.
Chile - the country which upset favourites Argentina with a penalty shootout victory in the Copa America final to retain their title in the world's oldest continental soccer competition. Chile earned themselves bragging rights as South America's dominant team as they beat heavyweights Argentina 4-2 on penalties for a second straight year to win their second Copa America title. The Centenary Copa America was played in the United States for the first time this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the inaugural Copa America in 1916.The tournament was expanded to 16 teams, 10 from South America and six from the CONCACAF region of North and Central America and the Caribbean.
Lionel Messi - the 29 year old famous football player from Argentina announced his retirement from international soccer after Argentina lost to Chile in Copa America final recently. Argentina lost to Chile 4-2 on penalties. Messi, who took the first penalty for Argentina, missed the goal. This is the seventh straight loss for Argentina in major international tournaments including Copa America, Confederations Cup and Fifa World Cup. Messi has suffered agonizing defeats in the 2014 World Cup final against Germany and to the Chileans last year.
India - this country won silver medal in the Champions trophy hockey championship played at London recently. They were defeated by Australia 1-3 in the shootout which was marred by controversy. This was India's best performance in Champions Trophy, bettering the bronze in 1982.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni - the Indian cricket captain who equalled Australian great Ricky Ponting's record of leading the side in 324 international matches across all formats. Dhoni achieved the milestone during the third and final Twenty20 International against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club. Dhoni, who was appointed captain in 2007, has led India in 60 Tests, 194 ODIs and 70 T20 Internationals. The 34-year-old is also India's most successful captain ever, having overseen 27 Test match victories, 107 ODI wins and 40 T20 successes. During his nine-year tenure, Dhoni has guided India to title triumphs in the World T20 (2007), the World Cup (2011) and the Champions Trophy (2013) besides leading the side to the top of the ICC Test rankings.
Anil Kumble - the former India captain was named as India's new cricket coach. The Board of Control for Cricket in India made the announcement in Dharamsala recently on the sidelines of the Board's Working Committee meeting. The BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee comprising three of India's greats -- Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and V V S Laxman -- were entrusted the job of picking the right candidate for the top post.
