Chera Empire


The word Kerala I derived from the World Chera .Kerala or the chera Kingom Was Originally A Part of the tamil country.Malayalam, the language was originally a part of the tamil  Country.malayam the language of kerala was evolved from the tamil language. the chera kingdom carried on a prosperous trade with the west ,and it was this trade especially in spices.which contributed to its wealth and prosperity.The kingdom has been identified with the keralaputra of the asokan edicts. The chera land included the present kerala state and kanyakumari district and it extended sometimes into the kongu country (modern Coimbatore district and South Selem )

Rise Of the Second Chera Empire

The History of the carly cheras of the sangam age has already been sketched in an earlier chapter. the sangam age was followed by a long historical night. very little known about the history of the cheras till we come to the end of the 8th century. A,D by about 800 A.D the Cheras again established their supermacy in kerala. The second Chera Empire which they established had its capital at Thiruvanchi-Kulam Or Mahodayapuram (Modern Cranganore) . It is  More popularly called the empire of the Kulasekharas.It flourished till the beginning of the 12th century A,D And Its Rulers 13 in number exercised authority over the whole of kerala.
The Founder of the second chera empire was kulasekhara varman Or Kulasekhara Alwar(800-820 Ad). He Is one of the greatest religious teachers of south india and is A leading figure in the history of Vaishnavism.He rendered Great services to Sanskrit Literature and Vaishnava Religion . He wrote The Perumal Thirumozhi In Tamil and the Mukundamala In Sanskrit.
He Was Succeeded by Rajasekhara Varman (824-844 AD) A devout Saivite,This ruler has been identified wih the famous saiva saint Cheraman Perumal Nayanar. It was during his reign that the Kollam Era commencing in 825 AD Came Into Vougue in Kerala Sankaracharya, the great Advaita Philosopher, Was a Contemporary of both Kulasekhara Alwar And RajaSekhara Varman
